1-1/2 cups sifted flour 1 tsp. cream of tartar 1/2 tsp. soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1 egg 1/2 tsp. vanilla 18 pecan halves
Sift together the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt into a large bowl. Add the brown sugar, vegetable shortening, egg and vanilla. Blend with a spoon or electric mixer until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Pat 3/4 of the mixture firmly into greased bottom of an 8 by 8 by 2 inch pan. Spread with the chocolate filling and sprinkle with the remaining crumb mixture. Arrange pecan halves over the top, one for each bar. Bake at 375* for 30 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.
Chocolate Filling: 1 square unsweetened chocolate 2 tbl. butter 2 tbl. cream 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup chopped pecans
Blend together the chocolate, butter and 2 tbl. cream. Beat in 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar. Stir in vanilla and pecans.
